Strawbale houses have good insulation properties
because strawbales contain plenty of air which is
capsulated into fiber. The U values are
following:
walls and floors 0,13 0,13 W/m2K
ceiling 0,09 W/m2K
For comparison the wall that consists of 150 mm
mineral blocks and 150 polystyrol insulation has
an U-value of 0,23 W/m2K (the
convetional modern house).
We recommend good quality and well designed doors
and windows(Wiking Window or Velux), but the
final decision of course is given to the client.
The heating system is felexible, effective and
automatic to ensure comfortable conditions.
The outer wind shield is done by using
lime-paster. This keeps the bales dry and lets
the vapour from inside to move through wall. The
exterior can be covered with wooden panelling-
that's the choice of taste.
Extra energy efficency is achieved by placing the
bigger window areas to south, gaining solar
energy up to 20% of the total heating needed.
Combining all these different aspects of gains
and design the total of energy consumption of the
house is aproximately 70% less than conventional
houses leading to somewhat 50 kWh/m2 in
a year. But thats not the last word of the
construction- passive houses use 15 kWh/m2 in
a year, which is achieved by special glazing,
ventilation systems with heat exchange and
efficient home appliances.Links to videos about
